Pharmacognosy & Phytochemistry

Putting nature back into drug discovery — the indispensable link between pharmacology, medicinal chemistry, and clinical pharmacy.

Department Overview

Pharmacognosy & Phytochemistry

The Department of Pharmacognosy and Phytochemistry has a rich history and tradition of academic excellence in both teaching and research. The pharmacognosist forms an important and indispensable link between pharmacology and medicinal chemistry on one hand, and between pharmaceutics and clinical pharmacy on the other. This century holds plenty of opportunities and challenges for the pharmacognosist — our endeavour is to put nature back into drug discovery and drug development, in the alleviation of human suffering.

Our departmental programmes incorporate pharmacology and pharmaceutical chemistry, and graduates are well trained to accept employment in either or both disciplines.

An Indispensable Link

Where Pharmacognosy Connects

PharmacologyMedicinal Chemistry

Pharmacognosy links the study of drug action with the design of new chemical entities.

PharmaceuticsClinical Pharmacy

It connects raw natural material to formulation and eventual patient care.

Curriculum Breadth

Built for Flexibility

Our research and curriculum incorporate a wide range of biomedical sciences, providing maximum flexibility for graduates entering either pharmacology or pharmaceutical chemistry-aligned careers.
